The California CDL, explained: classes, permit, and the test
What each class covers, how the commercial learner's permit works, and what the general knowledge test asks — from the California Commercial Driver Handbook.
A commercial driver's license (CDL) is your entry to professional driving in California. You can drive commercially within the state at 18, and cross state lines or haul hazardous materials at 21. The path runs through a commercial learner's permit (CLP): pass the knowledge tests, hold the CLP for 14 days, complete entry-level driver training, then take the skills test.
Class A, B, or C — which one do you need?
Class A — any legal combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, when the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR. Think tractor-trailers.
Class B — a single vehicle over 26,000 pounds GVWR (towing 10,000 pounds or less), or a 3-axle vehicle over 6,000 pounds. Think buses, dump trucks, box trucks.
Class C — a Class C vehicle that needs an endorsement: hazardous materials, passenger vehicle, or tank.
The path: CLP → training → skills test
1. Pass the knowledge tests at the DMV and get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
2. Hold the CLP for 14 days — only then can you apply for the skills test.
3. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) if you're getting an original Class A or B, upgrading B→A, or adding a school-bus, passenger, or HazMat endorsement. California also requires at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
4. Pass the skills test — and you're a commercial driver.

The general knowledge test covers the California Commercial Driver Handbook: vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, shifting, communicating and seeing, space and stopping distance, and cargo safety. You get three attempts to pass each knowledge test — fail the same test three times and your application is no longer valid.
