Your California motorcycle permit (M1), explained
Who needs what at every age, how the knowledge test works, and what you can't do on a permit — straight from the California Motorcycle Handbook.
To ride a motorcycle in California you need an M1 license — and for most riders the first step is a motorcycle instruction permit. You can apply for a permit at 15½. Riders under 21 must hold the permit for at least six months and complete a CHP-approved California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) course before they can be licensed. Riders 21 and older can skip the permit entirely: finish CMSP or pass the DMV riding test.
What you need at each age
15½–17½: a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education and Driver Training, plus the CMSP course (you'll get a DL 389 certificate). Then pass the DMV knowledge test to get your permit.
18–20: no driver-ed certificate needed, but CMSP is still mandatory — it's required for everyone under 21. Hold the permit six months, then upgrade.
21+: you don't need an instruction permit at all. Complete CMSP or pass a motorcycle driving test at the DMV, pass the knowledge test, and you're licensed.
The six-month rule
If you're under 21, California law makes you hold your motorcycle instruction permit for at least six months before you can get the M1 license. Use that time to practice — the knowledge you build is exactly what the DMV tests.
The knowledge test (and how to pass it first time)
The M1 knowledge test covers the California Motorcycle Handbook: lane positioning, braking, curves, carrying passengers, lane splitting, and riding visibly. The DMV allows three attempts to pass. M1 vs M2 — which license?
M1 authorizes you to operate any two-wheeled motorcycle, plus everything in class M2. M2 covers motorized bicycles, mopeds, or bicycles with an attached motor. If you want to ride a regular motorcycle, you need M1.
